Is Your Hairstyle Giving Away Your Age?

Don’t let your hairstyle tell the world how old you are! If you’re an older woman, it’s easy to get into a rut with your hair. But a new hairstyle may be just the thing you need to look younger.

Here are some ideas for updated hairstyles for the mature woman. But first, let’s start with some common mistakes that older women make with their hair that can make them look older.

Common Mistakes That Older Women Make

1. Too much/too dark color

Opaque, root-to-tip, solid color every month or so can actually make you look older. You don’t want monotone, dark hair even if that’s what you had naturally in your youth.

2. Skin tone and hair color should agree

Women often make the mistake of coloring their hair according to “how it’s always looked.” But your skin tone and pigment change as you age, and your hair naturally does, too. Generally, even those with dark complexions can look more youthful by going a bit lighter on the color. (Remember, nature was lightening your hair already!)

3. Know when your style’s time is up

Few things age your face like an outdated style. Sometimes older women cling to a style they’ve always known but that just doesn’t do well with their more mature face. You can even stick with a classic style and just update it if you’re really not wanting to let go.

So on to hairstyles for mature ladies…

Keep your hair from aging you! Check out these flattering new looks for women over 50.

Women Over 50

Short hair doesn’t have to be the rule! Of course, short hair is great is it’s what you like; there are plenty of youthful short styles. Let’s take a look at some of the style tips for women over 50.

1. Build body

Flat, heavy, sleek hair can make an older woman’s face look worn and drawn. While frizz is something you may have been fighting, ease up on the fight and let some body and yes, even frizz come back in. Think shine and bounce. (Note: stylist caution against “big hair” here.)

2. Layers

Whether you go with a few or a lot, layers are really helpful in giving mature hair more youthful fullness. Layers underneath your style can help fluff up your look, especially if you blow dry upside down.

3. A little freedom…

Did your grandmother sleep in those plastic rollers and then apply what seemed like a layer of shellac to hold those smooth curls in place? Honestly, nothing says “old” like helmet-like hairstyles. Let your hair have some swing and some freedom! Try a style that is low-maintenance and let your locks relax.

Women Over 60

At this age, short styles are generally the most flattering. But not always!

1. Spikes

Sassy spikes give women over 60 a spunky, energetic look. Spikes are surprisingly low-maintenance.

2. Chin-length

Many chin-length styles are flattering for women this age. Simple, face-framing layers and a side part can look youthful yet show age gracefully.

3. Pulled-back hair

If you want longer hair, try pulling it back into a graceful bun or chignon. That look can actually be very youthful and sophisticated.

As you can see, there’s no “one way” to do hairstyles once you’re over 50. There are all kinds of options – hopefully you’ll find one that works for you!
